Government Matters: Kyle Armstrong

Back to All Videos

While people were scrambling to find face masks at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Islamic State terror group was trying to scam Americans with a fraudulent website claiming to have an abundant supply of masks. A team of federal agents discovered the scheme, shut it down and disrupted the financing network.

  • Kyle Armstrong, a former FBI special agent and finalist for a Service to America Medal who was part of that team, said terrorist fundraising efforts are a very widespread, international and evolving problem.
  • The FBI had been tracking a known ISIS financier for a couple years and noticed he was connected to the fake face mask site, said Armstrong.
  • After deeper investigation, the “Bitcoin Terror Takedown Team” dismantled the fraud operation before it had a chance to cause large-scale damage.
